Augusta's Other Sports

Granted, the Masters® Tournament is the granddaddy of them all, but Augusta offers several other big-time sporting events for its visitors:

Augusta GreenJackets
Augusta became a charter member of the South Atlantic League in 1904, when Ty Cobb, appearing in his first season as a pro ballplayer, batted .237 in 37 games for Augusta. Most recently, the Boston Red Sox farm club won last year's championship of the SAL.

The Greenjackets play in beautiful Lake Olmstead Stadium, built over the fall and winter of 1994-95. For tickets, call (706) 736-7889 or go to the website.

Augusta Lynx
Gearing up to start their third season in the East Coast Hockey League, the Lynx are considered the hottest ticket in town.

They skate from October through early April, when the playoffs start, in the Augusta-Richmond County Civic Center. For ticket information call (706) 724-4ICE, or visit the website.

Augusta Stallions
Arenafootball2, a regionally based minor-league version of Arena Football, made its debut in Augusta this past season. The Stallions will be looking to build on last season's semi-final appearance in the playoffs.

For ticket information, call 706-724-2400 or visit the website.

The Augusta Futurity
Launched in February 1980 as a way to provide a futurity on the East Coast, the Augusta Futurity is now considered by many cutters to be the No. 2 show nationally. It has grown beyond the greatest expectations of Atlantic Coast Cutting Horse Association members. An estimated 750 entries this year vied for a purse in excess of $755,000.

For ticket information, call (706) 828-7700 or visit the website.

Augusta Southern Nationals
The Augusta Southern Nationals, "the world's richest drag boat race," is held on the Savannah River in Augusta. Last year the event carried more than $120,000 in purse and prizes. Proceeds will go to the Augusta chapter of the Special Olympics.

For ticket information, call (706) 823-6600 or visit the website.

Barrel Horse World Championships
The National Barrel Horse Association World Championships are held each year in Augusta. Last year's event drew more than 1,200 entries for the entire show.

The National Barrel Horse Association, headquartered in Augusta, currently has more than 17,000 members residing in all 50 states.

For more information, visit the organization's website.

Augusta Boxing Club
The Augusta Recreation and Parks Department, with assistance from area law enforcement agencies, implemented the Augusta Boxing Association/ Augusta Police Athletic League (P.A.L.) in an effort to curtail drug abuse and crime among young adults and children. For more information, visit the website.

Augusta Rowing Club
The Augusta Rowing Club is located on the Savannah River. Founded by a handful of rowing enthusiasts, the club has grown to see nationwide recognition for its excellence. It is host to the Augusta Spring Regatta and The Head of The South Regatta. For more information, visit the website.
