Best Places for Kids
Fort
Discovery
"Science is fun" is the motto of the demonstrators who guide
visitors through the many exhibit areas. And they firmly believe
that fun is contagious. From a trip to Mars (aboard a full-motion
simulator), to a theater experience where you travel through
time (the special effects will "wow" you), to a high-wire
bicycle ride (counterweights keep you safe), learning is truly
an adventure at Fort Discovery.

Augusta Museum of
History
Permanent exhibitions include the award winning Augusta's Story
- 12,000 years of local history from early Indians through Susan
Still's 1997 space shuttle mission; the community's medical
history, a restored 1917 steam locomotive and a reconstructed
1930's gas station. Visitors will clean cotton in a replica
cotton gin and view a 56-foot Petersburg boat that speaks to
river and commercial activities; documentaries shown continuously
in the History Theater. Located at 560 Reynolds Street.

Riverwalk
The excitement of Augusta begins on the water! A leisurely stroll
down a tree-shaded walkway... concert under the stars... an
afternoon picnicking... shopping...touring the museums... Augusta's
Riverwalk has something for everyone to enjoy.

Thurmond
Lake
Augusta may lie 2.5 hours from the ocean but there's still plenty
of water where you can take a respite. At 70,000 surface acres,
Thurmond is the largest, man-made Corps of Engineers' lake east
of the Mississippi River. It features 1,200 miles of shoreline,
and the 80,000 acres of land that surround the water in Georgia
and South Carolina are rich with timber. More timber is harvested
from here than any other Corps property in the country, in fact
-- and there's a regular prescribed burn program to keep the
undergrowth lush for the abundant wildlife.

Savannah
Rapids Park
Located on the banks of the beautiful Savannah River and adjacent
to the canal, this park offers a breathtaking view of the rapids
and an excellent opportunity for canoeing, fishing and bicycling
along a scenic eight-mile trial leading to downtown Augusta.
