Rules of the Road
Anyone who drives a car must have a valid driver's license issued by the state in which they live; it is good in Georgia for one year. Georgia does not require an international driver's license although most car rental companies do. Speed limits vary and are posted in "miles per hour" (mph), not "kilometers per hour" (kph), on signs along the road. The maximum speed is 65 mph (106 kph) on highways and interstates in or near urban areas. On residential or urban streets, the speed limit is 30 mph (50 kph) unless posted otherwise. Visitors are advised to obtain a driver's manual before operating a vehicle. For more information, call the Georgia Department of Public Safety (404-657-9300) or view the On-line Manuals at the Georgia Department of Public Safety website.
