Emerson Boozer
Super Bowl Hero

This native Augustan graduated from Lucy Laney High School and became the New York Jets' star running back in the Super Bowl III in 1969. He was born on the Fourth of July in 1943 at his family's home in Augusta.

His mom and dad's combined weekly take home pay in 1950 was $37 to take care of their then-four children, but Mr. Boozer said, "We were happy children because we had loving parents, a home, clothing and food on the table."

The family raised vegetables and Mr. Boozer would walk with his father and brother to catch fish in the Savannah River. He became a sharpshooter with marbles before he became famous in football.

Mr. Boozer has said his wish is for children to understand the importance of reading, writing, science and basic mathematics skills and to perform in high school at their highest levels.
