The 1930s
The Masters had a lot going for it from the beginning. It had the game's marquee player, Bobby Jones. It had a new course that was drawing rave reviews for its beauty and playability. In 1935, Gene Sarazen gave the tournament a signature moment.

The 1940s
Byron Nelson and Ben Hogan once worked together in the same caddie yard. In 1942, with the world at war, the Masters was held for the last time before a three-year hiatus. Nelson and Hogan would be key figures as high drama played out at Augusta National.

The 1950s
The year 1958 was eventful at the Masters Tournament. Two bridges across Rae's Creek were dedicated in honor of Ben Hogan and Byron Nelson. A young pro named Arnold Palmer won the tournament for the first time. And Amen Corner was born.

The 1960s
Argentina's Roberto De Vicenzo was poised to battle Bob Goalby in an 18-hole playoff in 1968 when he got the sad news that he had signed an incorrect scorecard. De Vicenzo had to settle for second place and the silver medal that goes to the runner-up.

The 1970s
Gary Player's final victory at Augusta National was his least likely and most spectacular. The South African found himself trailing by seven shots going into the final day of the 1978 Masters. But seven birdies over the final 10 holes gave Player a one-stroke victory.

The 1980s
Call it fate, call it luck, call it anything. Just be sure to call Larry Mize a Masters champion. The Augusta native was a decided underdog when he found himself in a sudden-death playoff with Greg Norman and Seve Ballesteros in 1987.

The 1990s
No chairman since Clifford Roberts faced as many tough issues as Hootie Johnson did. Like Roberts, Johnson didn't back down from any challenge during his tenure. Johnson rose from a small-town banker to chairman of the executive committee of Bank of America.

The 2000s
Shortly after becoming the sixth chairman in Augusta National and Masters history in 2006, Billy Payne said getting young people involved with golf and using technology to spread the word were among his top goals. Five years later, Payne is well on his way.
