CBS to air Tiger special before Masters coverage Sunday

Web posted 04/13/97

CBS Sports will highlight the meteoric rise of 21-year-old golf sensation Tiger Woods in a one-hour television special today at 3 p.m., one hour before final-round coverage of the Masters Tournament begins, with Woods leading by nine strokes.

The special, entitled Tiger Woods: Son, Hero and Champion, is narrated by golf commentator Jim Nantz. It includes exclusive access to family archives, and interviews with Woods' family and a number of golf legends, including Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus.

``Tiger Woods is one of the most popular and intriguing stars we've seen in years, and people want to know what he's all about,'' said Rob Correa, vice president of programming for CBS Sports. ``Tiger transcends golf and is one of a handful of athletes who warrant this type of in-depth profile.''

Woods is trying to capture his first Masters title in his first year as a professional. The three-time U.S. amateur champion played in the 1995 and '96 tournaments as an amateur and turned pro last August.

Since turning pro, he won three tournaments - the Las Vegas Invitational and the Disney/Oldsmobile Classic in '96 and the Mercedes Championship in the first tournament of 1997. He was named Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year.
