Jobe: 'Course wears you down'

Web posted 04/09/00

Brandt Jobe of Southlake, Texas, is compiling a diary for the 64th Masters Tournament. Jobe, 34, finished tied for 14th in his first Masters appearance, in 1999. By finishing among the top 16, Jobe earned an invitation back to the 2000 Masters. He is ranked No. 79 on the latest PGA Tour money list with $206,864. The former UCLA golfer played the Japanese Tour from 1995, winning six times, before joining the PGA Tour this year. Jobe is sharing his thoughts this week with staff writer David Westin.

It was a tough week. I finished the tournament with a 2-over-par 74 Sunday and was 9-over-par 297 for the tournament. My first three rounds were 73-74-76.

You walk away and look at the scoreboard and see I shot 9 over for the tournament. I just didn't play that bad. That's the way it goes. It's just tough out here.

On Sunday, I did birdie Nos. 15 and 16. I guess it was a mini-rally. You always want to finish up well. I burned the edges of the cup on the last two holes, too. At least something good happened.

I got nothing out of my round Sunday. I birdied the first hole and I thought, `Here, we go, maybe you can make a few birdies and have a good day.' I hit some good shots, but I didn't make the putts when I needed to.

I shot 1-over-par 37 on the front nine and I didn't miss a shot. You're like, `OK.' Then I went to the back nine and did the same thing. I hit a bunch of good shots and didn't capitalize.

That's why this place is so difficult. It just wears you down. You think you hit a perfect shot the right distance and you hit a slope and something happens. Then when you do hit it close you've got to make that putt because you don't have that many chances.

The hard thing to figure out here is the wind. It's almost impossible. We're standing in the middle of the fairway on No. 18, I hit my shot and we're walking up the fairway and it's dead into the wind. You can have all the wind charts and maps you want and you can't figure out this wind. I don't think you'll ever figure it out.

I putted poorly this week. I had 30 putts on Thursday and Friday, 29 on Saturday and 33 on Sunday. The greens are perfect. If you're seeing your line and hitting your putts the right speed, that is the key. I either hit it on the lips or knocked it 4 feet by. I never had that nice pace where it was consistent. I didn't have good pace or vision on the greens this week. That is huge out here, to have confidence with the putter. I felt pretty good the last two days, but there were no rewards out there.

I'll be playing in the MCI Classic this week in Hilton Head, S.C., take a week off and then probably play Houston. Then my wife is due to give birth about the first of May.

Summing up the week, it was great. We had a wonderful house to stay in this week. I had some good practice rounds with Vijay Singh and Dennis Paulson. I certainly wanted to make the cut, and there was a reward for that. It was a thrill. We had a blast. This is a wonderful place. It's just frustrating because you want to do so well.

This was my second time playing in the Masters, and I was more comfortable this year. Now I've got to figure out a way to get back here next year. I've got to play hard this year to finish on the top 40 on the money and get invited back. I definitely want another shot at this.
