Amateurs struggle to make cut

Unlike last year's Masters Tournament, amateurs made it to the weekend in Augusta.
Making the cut is another matter.
Only one of five amateurs competing in the 2002 Masters finished play Friday before the second round was suspended by rain. U.S. Public Links champion Chez Reavie shot 86 for a 36-hole total of 160, likely missing the cut.
Reavie is in no hurry to hit the road, though.
"I'm staying around here," he said. "I wouldn't miss this for the world."
The other four could become cut victims when second-round play concludes today.
Tim Jackson was 5-over through 15 holes Friday. The U.S. Mid-Amateur champion is 9-over for the tournament.
With the cut line projected at 3-over, British Amateur champion Michael Hoey and U.S. Amateur champ Bubba Dickerson are in the best positions to play the final two rounds.
Dickerson was 2-under through 10 holes Friday, but an opening-round 79 leaves him at 5-over. With a strong finish to his second round, Dickerson has a chance to make the cut.
Hoey stands at 4-over for the tournament with four holes remaining in his second round. He opened with a 75, and was 1-over through the 14th hole Friday.
Robert Hamilton, the U.S. Amateur runner-up, will need a miracle today to make the cut. He is at 10-over with only six holes to play, but what day it will be - Hamilton is paired with Arnold Palmer.
"This is about as good as it gets," Hamilton said of playing with Palmer as the King takes his last bow at the Masters. "Obviously, I would have liked to have finished (Friday), but for me it's another day with him. Maybe we can go out there and get sun and bright skies for him coming up 18. That would be great."
