Davis Love III blasts out of the sand onto the 13th green. (Todd Bennett/Augusta Chronicle)

First-round leader bogeys four holes

Web posted 04/12/02

Davis Love III missed a four-foot par putt on No. 18 Friday and stormed off the course, blowing off the media in the process.

After leading the Masters Tournament with an opening 5-under-par 67 Thursday, Love may have blown his chance for his first green jacket. Love, of Sea Island, Ga., ballooned to a 75 and stands at 2-under-par, seven shots behind 36-hole clubhouse leader Vijay Singh.

Love, along with Nick Price and Brad Faxon, teed off at 9:58 a.m. in the midst of a driving rainstorm. Wearing a rain suit, Love missed a four-foot par putt on the par-4 first hole, his first bogey in this year's Masters.

"If this were the PGA Tour we wouldn't have played," Love's playing partner Faxon said about the conditions. "It was bordering on laughable the first three holes. You couldn't take a drop. Everybody hit shots out of casual water because there was no place to go."

Rain or shine, the 37-year-old Love never got his putter going, using 32 putts on the day. He birdied No. 3 and remained at the top of the leaderboard until a bogey at No. 12 dropped him back.

Love added another bogey at No. 14 before his mishap at the par-four 18th hole. The two-time Masters runner-up then entered the scoring booth, signed his scorecard and sped off.

Love's first two rounds were a contrast in performance. After hitting 11 fairways and 14 greens in regulation Thursday, he found eight fairways and 11 greens Friday.

Despite his disappointing play, Love will make his first cut in nearly a month. He missed the cut at The Players Championship and the BellSouth Classic leading into the Masters.

Love has had a disappointing year. The No. 3 career money earner on the PGA Tour ($18,193,352) has made just five cuts in 10 tournaments. His best finish is a tie for 16th at the Mercedes Championships on Jan. 6.
