....my first tee shot

I hit it way left. I had the nerves working and it was my first Masters. I hit it in the bark over there. It wasn't a very good one, but it got better over the week. I hit the fairway the next few days. I was playing with Tiger Woods in the first round and after my tee shot on No. 1, he came up to me and said, 'just relax, it's a long day. Just take it easy.' I hit a 4-iron for my second shot and almost made birdie.
So is was kind of a win-win thing there. It was a got-out-of-jail card.

I think I hooked it a little left up by the trees. It wasn't a memorable tee shot, but it was one that was nice to get over with. Then I whistled one down in front of the green and didn't get up and down and made bogey. I was playing with Arnold Palmer . I remember getting to the tee too early and there was an old lady standing behind the tee and she had about every badge from every Masters on her body and she said to me, 'obviously, this must be your first Masters because you're getting to the tee too early.' Sure enough Arnold showed up 30 seconds to go before we teed off. How nervous was I? I don't remember. But that old lady said I looked nervous so I must have been.

I hit one that was going right at the left end of the fairway bunker. I didn't know if it was going to make the fairway or not. It was just teetering, it seemed like forever, before it just cleared the bunker. I made a par. It was a great start. I can remember hitting a nice approach shot in. I was paired with Tiger Woods and he hit it over the green. The pin was back-left. I was thinking, 'I only know a little bit about course management and the best player in the world just hit it over the green.'

It went right down the fairway. I was nervous, absolutely. I don't think there's a player in the world who wouldn't be nervous standing on the first tee at the Masters. It's an amazing place. It certainly brings out the nerves in the best of players.

It went right in the middle, somehow. I hammered it really hard. I missed the green on my second shot and had a 5-footer for par. I made it, but I was really nervous.
Billy Mayfair (1988)
It went right over into the ninth fairway. I had absolutely no legs. I played with Larry Mize and he hooked his into the trees. Then I got up there and I don't think I started feeling my legs until I was walking down No. 3 fairway. I was definitely nervous, that's for sure. I had a pretty good shot into the green, hit it up front of the green and made four.

I hit it quite good. It went right down the middle. I don't know what I made on the hole but I think I shot around even-par and made the cut. It was nerve-racking, I can tell you that. It's been a long time ago. I've been probably as nervous since, but up to that point that was it.

I could barely tee it up, my hand was shaking so bad. I swung as hard as I could and hit it right down the middle. I was playing with Larry Mize and Fred Funk . They said, 'that a boy.'

I remember being less nervous than I thought I'd be because the crowds were bigger on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday than Thursday and I'd already played with so many great players, like Nicklaus, Norman, Faxon, Palmer, Seve, Lee Janzen, Bernhard Langer , in the practice rounds. I was pretty comfortable on the first tee. I hit it in the left rough, but I made birdie. I started out birdie, birdie, par, birdie so I got off to a quick start.

Justin Leonard (1993) I hit it the fairway and still made bogey. Hit a good ball, skanked it over there about 10 yards right of the green. Chipped up about 15 feet and two-putted for bogey.

There was tough conditions. It was cold and wet. I remember I hit it down the fairway. I remember when I got to the green the greens were about 15 on the stimpmeter, quicker than I'd ever seen.
