Fowler proud of facial hair

23-year-old makes another fashion statement

There are two kinds of golfers at the Masters Tournament: Those with moustaches, and those without.

Rickie Fowler is doing his best to join the first group.

“I was surprised that I was actually able to create some sort of shadow around the mouth,” said Fowler, 23, who noted the deep shag above the lips of golfers Johnson Wagner and Geoff Ogilvy. “They’re strong. They’re a lot more healthy than mine.”

Fowler, who sported whiskers on his chin as well as on his upper lip, said no one should think the trio is making a fashion statement.

“It’s all for fun,” he said. “We’re not too worried about how they look. It’s us being us.”

Criticism will only motivate him, he said. He’s showing off his personality, like in the oversized brims of his caps and the bold colors of his shirts and slacks.

“There are a lot of people who don’t like (the facial hair), and that’s one of the main reasons it’s still around,” Fowler said. “I’m myself. I’m not trying to be like anyone else. Maybe it’s a good lesson to some kids out there that don’t worry about what others think of you; just be yourself, don’t try to be someone else.”

As for the golf, Fowler shot 74 and thought he had a decent start to his second Masters, considering the playing conditions. He’s also more relaxed.

“I’m definitely a lot more comfortable this year after having my first one out of the way. Not that the first one was a bad thing,” Fowler said. “I had a great group last year with Jason Day and Rory (McIlroy). We had a lot of fun and pulled off each other. This year I’ve definitely felt a lot more comfortable and a lot more at home.”
