The script was familiar for Nick Faldo as he became the second Masters winner to successfully defend his title.

Like the previous year, Faldo needed a sudden-death playoff.

Raymond Floyd, the 1976 winner, held the 54-hole lead and was poised to break Jack Nicklaus' record as oldest Masters champion.

Faldo, who trailed by four shots with six holes to play, birdied Nos. 13, 15 and 16 to make up ground on the 47-year-old Floyd. When Floyd bogeyed the 17th, the two were tied and headed for a sudden-death playoff.

After matching pars on the par-4 10th, the playoff ended on the 11th, where Faldo rolled in a birdie putt to beat Scott Hoch the year before.

This time, Faldo needed only a par as Floyd's approach came up short and found the greenside pond. Faldo hit the green in regulation and two-putted for the victory.
