Notes: Nike unveils new shoes for Masters

Nike announced Monday that several of its pros will wear “limited edition Lunar Control footwear.” The white shoe with green details is available for a retail price of $150.

Among those who will wear the new shoe are reigning Masters Tournament champion Charl Schwartzel, Paul Casey, Kevin Chappell, Stewart Cink, Simon Dyson, Ross Fisher, Lucas Glover and Francesco Molinari.

According to the news release, “Lunar Control provides exceptional cushioning for walking the course and the Flywire stability for powerful golf swings. The Lunarlon foam midsole proves durable and highly responsive yet offers the underfoot comfort and ground feel players desire.”

Each pair comes with a shoe bag inspired by the white coveralls worn by Masters caddies.

SPECIAL WEEK: Kyle Stanley said the Masters is the only golf event he watches every year and that it’s very special to him. He said he came in last week to practice on the course.

Stanley said he’s happy with where his game is, and he is spending time focusing on his wedge play and putting.

“This is one of those golf courses where it’s about putting yourself in a quality position,” he said. “Knowing where to put the ball is going to be key this week.”

He admitted he didn’t handle pressure well in San Diego when he lost a three-shot lead on the final hole, eventually losing in a playoff to Brandt Snedeker. He rebounded the next week in a come-from-behind win at the Phoenix Open.

HOT SHOT: The largest Monday crowds gathered behind the 18th green to watch Tiger Woods complete his practice round.

But just as the four-time Masters Tournament champion made his approach, K.J. Choi stole the spotlight.

While the patrons faced the 18th, Choi hit the shot of the day behind them at the par-4 ninth. He holed out from 160 yards, creating a roar before Woods reached the 18th green.

Woods and playing partner Mark O’Meara finished their nine-hole round and headed for the clubhouse without speaking to the media.

Choi, who played the front nine alone, joined Masters rookie Sang-Moon Bae on the 10th tee.

THAT’S A WRAP: Traditional menu items such as egg salad sandwiches and pimento cheese are still available at Masters concessions stands, but another classic sandwich has been replaced with a more healthful option.

The chicken sandwich, served cold in previous years, is no longer on the menu. A grilled chicken wrap has taken its place.

Brian Cassidy, making his first visit to Augusta National as a guest of Electrolux Corp., said he was pressured by friends to go with one of the traditional sandwiches but chose the new item instead.

“It hits the spot,” he said. “It’s cold, which is what I wanted.”

The egg salad and pimento cheese sandwiches are available for $1.50 each. The grilled chicken wrap is $3.
