Andy Sullivan rolled in a 14-foot birdie putt on No. 18 to end his day on a promising note, but simply seeing the day end was perhaps the best part for him.

“It just felt like it capped the day off there to hole one in the last, but I was literally trying to run up the hill there to go to the restroom real quick,” the witty Sullivan said. “I was literally bursting. It was horrible. (Adam Scott) was taking his time and I was like, come on, man, hurry up. It was brutal.”

The 30-year-old from England was all jokes after shooting 1-under-par 71 for the first round Thursday. It blew past his scores from his first Masters Tournament last year, when he missed the cut.

Sullivan picked up four birdies to three bogeys, including a birdie on No. 12 when he knocked it to two feet. He sank the putt on No. 18 to get in red figures entering the second round.

“I’m buzzing with that, especially after last year,” he said. “That was probably the most nervous I’ve ever been on the golf course ever last year, to coming out this year and actually feeling normal again and going out there and playing golf again. It’s a nice feeling to have.”
