Larry Mize has one goal entering Friday’s second round: get back to even par.

“That’s what I’m shooting for,” Mize said. “We’re 4-over right now, so I’d love to get back to even tomorrow. And, look, if I get to even then maybe take it a little deeper.”

After making the cut the past two years at Augusta National, Mize is in danger of ending his streak following an opening-round 76.

The 1987 Masters champion started steady Thursday, parring his first five holes. However, after a bogey on No. 6, Mize played his ensuing six holes in 5-over, including a double-bogey on No. 11.

“I got off to a rough start,” Mize said. “I was missing a lot of greens and forcing myself to get up and down on almost every hole. As they say, pros who putt for par and dogs that chase cars — it’s never good.”

The Augusta native regrouped with birdies on Nos. 13 and 15, which Mize admitted, “Probably saved my round.”

“Getting those two birdies was key,” he said. “I really needed that spark. Hopefully I can continue playing the way I did there on (Nos. 13 and 15).”

Mize, 59, hit only six of 18 greens in regulation, while finishing Thursday’s round with 28 putts. He hit 12 of 14 fairways.

“I came in here playing poorly and I’d love to turn it around a little bit,” Mize said. “It’s tough to play this golf course when you’re not hitting it very well.”

After missing the cut four-straight years from 2010-13, Mize has made the cut three out of the last four Masters.

“I really hope to make the cut,” Mize said. “It would mean a lot to keep playing the weekend.”
