Wesley Bryan came to Augusta National with hopes of being in contention. He leaves wanting redemption.

“I want to be back here,” said Bryan, who missed the cut in his first Masters appearance. “I want some redemption and hopefully next year we'll be able to give it another run.”

Bryan carded 78 on Friday after shooting an opening round 74. The Columbia native says he’ll defend his title next week in Hilton Head Island, S.C.

“I mean, I didn't play the par‑5s well this week, I didn't miss it in the correct spots on some of the par‑3s and that's pretty much how golf goes sometimes,” Bryan said. “But excited to get back to Harbour Town next week. It's a place I'm really familiar with and going to go defend there and hopefully figure some things out between now and then.”

When asked what he gained from this tournament, Bryan said, “If nothing else at least I know the golf course a little bit better.”

Bryan said no matter how many times you play Augusta National, there’s always something to be learned.

“You can play it for a lot of years and still pick up on things,” Bryan said. “So it was a learning experience — I’ll be better prepared next year. And, I mean, it's just really, really special to be able to compete in these, but I wanted to get in contention.”

On Friday, Bryan hit only 8 of 18 greens in regulation, while recording bogeys on Nos. 3, 4, 9, 10, 15 and 17. He did not have a birdie.

“I didn't play the way I wanted to and didn't putt it particularly well,” Bryan said. “Or hit it particularly well. I guess that's why I'm sitting on the wrong side of the cut line. It's disappointing because I felt like I was in pretty good form coming in. I guess that's just how it goes.”
