Children of Masters badgeholders carry on family tradition

Harriet and Tom Allen on Thursday carried on a tradition of attending the Masters Tournament that dates back to the 1950s.

Harriet Allen’s mother, Mary Jane Magrath of Conway, S.C., was an avid golfer and started receiving badges and attending the tournament in the 1950s.

“She was a classic Southern lady,” Tom Allen said. “She would get home and write Bobby Jones a note thanking him for the experience.”

In classic form, “Bobby Jones would write her a handwritten note back,” he said.

Magrath won the Conway Golf Club ladies’ tournament five times and once played at Augusta National Golf Club, said Allen, who collects Masters pins he wears on a hat to the tournament.

When she returned from Augusta National, Allen said he asked how she’d done on the 16th hole.

“I parred it,” she told him.

The Magrath children have been using their parents’ badges since the late 1990s, when they stopped attending every day.

Now 88, Mary Jane Magrath prefers to watch the tournament mainly on television, Harriet Allen said.
