Danny Willett makes memories in first Masters round

Danny Willett made a couple of memories in his first Masters Tournament round Thursday, both coming on two of the more famous holes at Augusta National Golf Club.

Willett eagled No. 13 by making a 64-foot putt that broke hard down the green to the back-right hole placement. He was reminded of the award for an eagle, two crystal highball glasses, as he finished his round.

“It’s the kind of thing you dream of when you’re a little kid,” said Willett, who finished at 1-under-par 71. “You know it’s going to be a stupidly-breaking putt.”

The 27-year-old also made a 39-foot putt for birdie on No. 16, which he described as a “troubling” putt for its hard break. That birdie put him at 2-under at the time.

Willett said an early tee time and playing alongside Larry Mize, who helped calm his nerves with friendly chats, were reasons for the good start. He didn’t experience much wind during the morning until No. 15.
