Kevin Stadler ties for eighth, secures return to Masters

Father, Craig, might have to rethink plans to quit

Earlier in the week, Craig Stadler hinted this might be his last Masters, saying he would probably stop using his exemption as a former champion next year – unless he had a chance to play with his son Kevin, who was competing in the tournament for the first time this year.

The elder Stadler, affectionately known as the “Walrus,” might reconsider stepping away after Kevin Stadler earned a ticket back to the Masters with a tie for eighth.

The 34-year-old finished at even par for the tournament after shooting 1-over par 73 on Sunday.

He was steaming after bogeying his final two holes, and didn’t realize he had secured an invite to next year’s Masters until he was told by a reporter.

“I didn’t play very well today … very disappointing,” Stadler said. “I have no idea what position I’m in. But (qualifying for next year’s tournament) certainly would be a good reward. I just need a few minutes to let go of the last couple holes.”

Kevin Stadler said it would be great if he could play a competitive round at Augusta with his dad next year, but understands if Craig, who won the Masters in 1982, wants to step away.

“He loves coming here,” Kevin Stadler said. “He is still super competitive, but his scores don’t show it. He hates putting up the numbers that he puts up around here. It wouldn’t surprise me if he’s gone, but I’d prefer to have him back.”

Craig Stadler tried to acknowledge his son coming off the 18th green, but Kevin wasn’t in the mood to talk much at the time.

“Unfortunately I got a bad gene I inherited from him,” Kevin Stadler said. “He knows what’s going through my mind.”
