Larry Mize birdies all four par-5s in final round

Moments after his final-round 74, Larry Mize lifted his hat and wiped at his forehead.

“It was fun to play the weekend,” he said. “I wish my swing was in better shape, but it was definitely great to post 72 holes.”

The 1987 Masters winner finished 13-over for the tournament. With milder conditions Sunday, Mize said he was “disappointed” he couldn’t go lower.

“The course is set up for good scores and I’m disappointed I couldn’t take advantage,” he said. “I wish I’d posted a red number today because it’s out there. The greens were milder than they’ve been all week.”

Mize birdied all four of the par-5s Sunday after carding a combined four birdies on the long holes from Thursday through Saturday. He birdied No. 13 every round except Friday.

“For me to play well around here, I have to take advantage of the par-5s,” he said. “I birdied all of them, didn’t I? You can tell my mind – I’m zoned out after playing. It’s such a mental grind around this golf course.”

With Mize, 57, making the cut, as well as the stellar play of 58-year-old Bernhard Langer, the Augusta native says their success speaks volumes about the competitiveness of the PGA Tour Champions.

“This should let everyone know how solid the (over-50) tour is,” Mize said. “There’s a bunch of players who can still play – I mean, look at Bernard Langer. Even I made the cut this week. The Champions Tour is in very good shape.”
