Larry Mize makes third cut since 2009

For the third time since 2009, Larry Mize is playing the weekend at Augusta National Golf Club.

The 1987 Masters winner shot 73 on Friday, highlighted by a birdie on No. 15 and an eight-foot par save on the 18th.

“I’m amazed right now,” Mize said. “I’m really struggling, but with that being said, my mental game is really good and my short game is really good. That’s getting me around.”

The Augusta native hit only seven of 18 greens in regulation Friday but needed just 26 putts, with no three-putts during the second round.

“I’m proud of my effort,” Mize said. “I really am. I’m not playing great, but I’ve been around to get up and down a lot.”

Mize, who opened with 76 on Thursday, has only two birdies in two days, but he has kept a relatively clean scorecard through 36 holes. He had two bogeys Friday, on Nos. 4 and 12.

“I’ve only made two birdies in two days and that’s not what you need,” Mize said. “But I tell you what – I’ve minimized bogeys and that’s been key.”

Mize has competed in every Masters since 1984 and says he’s not surprised by the rough conditions. He missed the cut last year with scores of 78-73.

“We’ve had many days like this at Augusta National,” Mize said. “This isn’t unusual in my 33 years playing, but when the wind kicks up it makes club selection and everything else very difficult.”
