Fan notes: Keep your eye on the eagle

The golden eagle plaque above the front porch of Eisenhower Cabin let Phyllis and Dwight Morrison know they were in the right place.

“I had a clue, but I wasn’t sure,” Dwight Morrison said. “I was really thrilled to realize that was Eisenhower Cabin.”

The couple took photographs with their friends, Rita and Jim Shiplet, in front of the cabin where President Eisenhower and his wife, Mamie, stayed during trips to Augusta.

“I just read the biography of Eisenhower talking about how his favorite times were here playing bridge and golf,” Phyllis Morrison said.

The Morrisons and the Shiplets once lived in Kansas, the former president’s childhood home.

WORTH THE WALK: After walking all 18 holes, Bill Curtis found a resting place Monday afternoon beneath the giant oak tree in front of the clubhouse.

“I’m a little tired, but it’s just such a special place,” he said. “If you love golf, it’s a place everyone should go at least once.”

Curtis, of Milwaukee, and his three buddies walked the course in reverse order, starting at the 18th hole and finishing at No. 1.

“Typically, you see (the golfers) coming at you instead of the other way,” he said. “It’s just a new perspective.”

WOLVERINE RUSH: A trip to the Masters Tournament was an extra bonus for three University of Michigan fans.

Dave Roosevelt and brothers Doug and Steve Haight, all wearing Michigan insignia on their hats and shirts, drove to Augusta from Atlanta after watching Michigan’s basketball team beat Syracuse on Saturday night in the NCAA Final Four.

“This is male nirvana,” said Steve Haight, of Birmingham, Ala.

The group left Augusta National Golf Club shortly after 2 p.m. Monday to drive back to Atlanta for the championship game.

“We’ll make it back here sometime. What are the chances Michigan makes it back in the Final Four?” said Doug Haight, of Evanston, Ill.
