The List: Six players have won the Masters with a birdie on No. 18

The Masters is known for producing Sunday drama, and nothing illustrates that better than a birdie to win outright on 18. Here are the six who have done it:

6 SANDY LYLE, 1988: From the fairway bunker, Lyle’s 7-iron shot lands about 30 feet past the pin but catches the slope and trickles down to just 10 feet away. Lyle sinks the putt and does a celebratory jig.

5 ART WALL, 1959: Wall birdied five of the last six holes, including 17 and 18, to shoot 66 and pass 12 players.

4 MARK O’MEARA, 1998: O’Meara created a three-way tie with Fred Couples and David Duval with his birdie at 17, then broke it by sinking a 20-foot putt for the win.

3 GARY PLAYER, 1978: The 42-year-old from South Africa won his third Masters by shooting 64 on Sunday, which featured birdies on seven of the final 10 holes.

2 PHIL MICKELSON, 2004: Lefty was seeking his first major win, and a late charge left him tied with Ernie Els with a hole to go. He put his second shot 18 feet behind the hole, then jumped for joy when his birdie putt tumbled in.

1 ARNOLD PALMER, 1960: Ken Venturi was in the clubhouse with the lead. Palmer rolled in a birdie putt at 17 to tie, then stuck his 6-iron approach to five feet and rolled in the putt for his second Masters win.
