An early eagle put Patrick Reed in the conversation midway through Friday, but a back-nine struggle left him scrambling going into the weekend.

Reed posted 4-over-par 40 on the back nine to finish 1-over for the day, and he finds himself 5-over overall after the second round of the Masters Tournament. It was enough to make the cut for the second consecutive year, but his play left him frustrated.

“I don’t deserve to make the cut the way I’m playing,” Reed said. “It was just some careless, bad golf. It’s not a good time to play poorly.”

The Augusta State University product started strong with birdies on the second and third holes. After a bogey on the fourth, he rebounded with an eagle on No. 8 by sinking a 16-foot putt to move to 1-over.

The back nine wasn’t as kind to Reed. He carded bogeys on Nos. 10, 13 and 18, and he posted double bogey on the 17th by chipping over the green and failing to get up and down.

“I started OK today,” he said. “I was 2-under through 3. It was downhill (after 8). Besides 8, it was just a mess.”

Reed said he needs consecutive under-par rounds over the weekend to get back in the thick of things. With more tough conditions expected, a charge could get him a favorable placement by Sunday.
