Rickie Fowler putts for par on No. 1. His third round started well, but trouble later put him at 1-under 215.

Rickie Fowler posted an impressive showing in the 2014 major tournaments. If he’s going to continue his stretch of great finishes, he’ll have to go low in the final round of the Masters Tournament.

Fowler got hot early Saturday but cooled late to post 2-under-par 70. He stands at 1-under 215, well off the pace.

“I’m going to need to put a good round together tomorrow to have a chance to finish in the top 10, and it’s going to have to be a really good one to get to the top five,” he said Saturday. “It’s not out of the question, but we’ll see what we can do.”

Last year, Fowler became the only golfer to finish fifth or better in all four majors, including a tie for fifth at the Masters.

He appeared to be making a run at another great finish after shooting 4-under on his final seven holes Friday and picking up where he left off. He shot 33 on the front side Saturday and birdied No. 10 and 11 to move to 5-under on his round. But just when it looked like he was going to move into contention, he failed to take advantage of the par-5 holes.

Fowler, 26, missed the green at No. 13 and settled for
par. At No. 15, he three-putted from 80 feet for another par.

His biggest mistake came at No. 18, with his tee shot missing the fairway right. His second shot hit a tree, and he was forced to punch his third shot toward the No. 10 tee. He knocked his fourth shot on the green and two-putted for double bogey.

“Unfortunately, I didn’t play the last six holes like I did yesterday,” Fowler said. “So there was those good 18 holes in there somewhere.”
