Spieth sets 54-hole Masters record

On Moving Day, Jordan Spieth moved right into the record books for the second day.

One day after setting the 36-hole Masters Tournament scoring record, he etched his name further into Augusta lore.

The young Texan carded 2-under-par 70 in today’s third round to set the tournament’s 54-hole scoring record with a 16-under-par 200 total. Spieth bested the mark shared by Raymond Floyd (1996) and Tiger Woods (1997) – 201.

Justin Rose made a huge move on the second nine. The Englishman birdied five of the last six holes for 67. He birdied four consecutive holes starting at No. 13 and ending with a blast from the bunker at 16 for a two. At No. 18, Rose rolled in a downhill 20-foot birdie putt to finish at 204. He will be in the final pairing with Spieth.

Three-time Masters champion Phil Mickelson also made a huge move, posting 67 to climb into the penultimate pairing with Charley Hoffman. The 44-year-old Mickelson opened with rounds of 70-68 and is in third at 205.

Hoffman, Spieth’s playing partner in the third round, shot 71 and is alone in fourth at 206.

Tiger Woods shot 68 and is tied at 210 with world No. 1 Rory McIlroy, who is trying to complete the career Grand Slam with a win Sunday. McIlroy and Woods will be paired together in the final round.

Kevin Streelman, the Par-3 Contest winner, shot his third consecutive 70 and is also tied for fifth at 210, along with Kevin Na (70) and Dustin Johnson (73).

Defending champion Bubba Watson opened the third round with a triple bogey at No. 1 and finished with 73. He sits at 215, tied with 213 Masters champion Adam Scott (74).

After posting an opening 8-under-64 on Thursday, Spieth followed with 66 for a 14-under-par 130 total that set the new 36-hole Masters record.

In the third round, Spieth birdied the par-5 second hole to briefly move to 15-under before recording his second bogey of the tournament at No. 4, three-putting the green. Spieth went birdie-bogey on Nos. 6 and 7.

He moved to 18-under with birdies at Nos. 15 and 16 but carded his first double bogey on No. 17 after finding the trees left of the fairway. He missed the green at No. 18, but got up and down for par.

Woods began the day 12 shots off the pace, but birdied Nos. 2 and 3. Then, he just missed a hole-in-one at the par-3 fourth, his tee shot sliding 10 inches past the cup.

Later, Woods pumped his right fist after rolling in a 15-foot birdie putt at No. 13.
