Cafe's poetry nights go on
That was the last line of the poem Sermon on the Mount, written and recited by a poet who went by the stage name Exodus at a recent poetry night contest at Orange Moon Cafe on Ellis Street.
Exodus was one of a number of poets who signed up to compete in the weekly poetry readings.
Those receiving high-enough scores from four judges proceeded to round two. Exodus and two others made it to the third and final round, where Exodus won the competition, and a crisp $100 bill.
Poetry nights are Thursdays, and the most popular entertainment offering at the cafe. The entry fee is $5, and food and drinks are served until closing at 2 a.m.
There is no enforced dress code, but the crowd is mature and attire is casual. Despite the three main customer complaints - the show starting about half an hour late, people talking during the poetry making it difficult to hear, and the waiter who continuously walked to and fro in front of the poets - there was a general positive attitude and relaxed atmosphere.
After the poetry, old school hip-hop played while the crowd mingled. There is a different theme each of the four nights the Orange Moon is open. Wednesdays are the nights to "Drink 'til You Sink" for $15, on Fridays there's a live band and jazz is offered Saturdays.
The Orange Moon opens at 8 p.m. and serves everything from appetizers to desserts, from beer to flavored martinis. With its dimly lighted interior and laid-back vibe, it is an ideal spot for the adult crowd to unwind.
