BellSouth disappoints Daly

Web posted 04/08/96

DALY'S DOZEN: British Open champion John Daly, who beat a hasty retreat from the Atlanta Country Club after missing the cut on Friday in the BellSouth Classic, spoke about the septuple bogey 12 he had in that tournament for the first time on Monday.

The 12 came Friday on the par-5 No. 8 hole, which was his 17th hole (he started the round on No. 10). Daly followed that with a three-putt bogey on the ninth hole to shoot 77 and miss the cut by one shot.

The 12 included three whiffs and two penalty shots for unplayable lies.

Asked if he knew what his score was after he finally finished the hole, Daly said ``I needed a calculator to add it up, I know that. You make a 12, you make a 12.''

Daly hit the green on the par-4 ninth hole in two shots and pulled a 7-foot par putt.

``I knew I had to two-putt on No. 9 to make the cut,'' Daly said. ``I choked that one too. Things like that happen for a reason they say. I still haven't been able to figure it out.''

Daly returned home to Memphis, Tenn., before arriving in Augusta on Sunday.

``I didn't even watch the (BellSouth) tournament on TV I was so disappointed I didn't get to play on the weekend,'' Daly said. ``It's sad because I love playing in Atlanta and that was the last year they're going to have the tournament there (at the Atlanta Country Club).''
