Barbara Nicklaus Diary: The back nine was really fun

Web posted 04/12/97

The back nine was really fun Friday.

Jack walked up to 14th tee 7 over par. He birdied No. 14, eagled No. 15 and birdied No. 18. It was exciting! Birdies and eagles are always exciting. And to be sure of playing Saturday was great.

Jack was really pleased, especially the way he finished - as were all our children.

It's always fun when you're here the whole week.

If he didn't make the cut, we would go home. The only time we didn't do that was in 1967 when Jack was defending champion and didn't make the cut. He stayed to put the green jacket on the winner (Gay Brewer Jr.). Mr. (Cliff) Roberts had asked him to.

We got up a little bit earlier Friday, but it wasn't too bad - 10:17 is a decent tee time.

Traffic wasn't bad. It took us about 15 minutes to get to the course, that's probably five more than usual.

We have 12 for dinner tonight (Friday). We're having the rest of our stone crabs and some chicken. It's Steve's birthday, so we're celebrating that.

Gary is coming in at 11 tonight and Michael, our youngest, is picking him up. It's the first time that all five children will be here for the weekend.

Tomorrow night (Saturday) all the kids have made plans to go out to dinner together. They're leaving the old folks at home.

Our plans for Saturday are really just the same thing as today. Breakfast - probably in shifts again when all the boys appear (I think I made five omelets this morning) - then we'll go out to the course.
