Langham finishes tournament with par round

Web posted 04/08/01

I shot an even-par 72 in Sunday's final round and finished at 4-over-par 292 for the tournament.

I parred the first 11 holes Sunday. I just kept looking for that first birdie. I ended up making a bogey on No. 12, then birdied Nos. 14 and 16 and bogeyed No. 17.

My group wasn't put on the clock Sunday like it was Saturday when we got a little out of position. I said at the time it ruined my week. It ruined my day, really. I was hoping to have a good round Saturday to try to get in position to finish in the top 16 and get an invitation back next year but shot 75.

There is virtually no way to play this course rushing around it. That was the hard part. It's hard enough to be a rookie here without having to rush around. The issue is gone, over with. It's water under the bridge.

I could have played a lot better this week, but unfortunately, it didn't come together for me. I putted atrociously for me. The putter just didn't act right this week. I hit a lot of lips, but that's golf.

I had 28 putts in the first round when I shot 72, 31 in the second when I had 73, 31 in the third when I shot 75 and 30 in Sunday's round./

A lot of that is trying to figure out these greens. That's why it's so hard to play here in you're first year.

I played the 16th hole, where I worked the scoreboard when I was in high school, well this week. I parred it the first round and third rounds and birdied it in the second and fourth rounds so I was two under on it.

I had some fond memories there on No. 16 and took advantage of it. I've seen about every shot and putt there that you can imagine so I felt pretty comfortable standing over the tee shot and the putts.

On Sunday, I hit an 6-iron off the tee and made about an 8-footer for birdie on No. 16. It was probably the fastest putt I had all week. It was behind the hole with a little left-ot-right break.

The best shot I hit this week was my tee shot on No. 16 in the second round. It almost went in the hole. In a week of a lot of so-so shots, it kept me around for the weekend.

When I worked the scoreboard, it was a lot of fun. This was a lot of work. This is a job and a tough course that requires a lot of mental energy to play every day. It's part of the learning process. We'll do better next time.

I learned a lot and stored a lot in the memory banks. I'm just glad I got to play four days and play here on the weekend to see how this course plays. It plays a lot different on the weekend than it does during the week. I got a little more feel of what the true Augusta is like these last two days. The greens were a lot firmer and faster than they were the first couple of days.

Every round you play here is one you can put under your belt and draw on in future rounds.

Hopefully, I'll be back here next year. I'm looking forward to coming back and doing better.
