Fred Couples watches his second shot to No. 18. Couples, who so far has made every cut in his Masters career, is now at 2-over for the tournament. The projected cut is 3-over. (Andrew Davis Tucker/Augusta Chronicle)

'92 champ's cut streak is on the line

The streak is still alive for Bernhard Langer, but Fred Couples will have to wait until this morning to be certain about his.

The two players with the longest active consecutive cuts made at the Masters appear to be in good position. The second round of play was suspended Friday with 38 players still on the course, and the projected cut line is 3-over par, 147.

The low 44 players, plus those within 10 strokes of the leader, will make the 36-hole cut. Vijay Singh is atop the leaderboard with a 9-under total of 135. Retief Goosen is the only player with a realistic chance of catching or passing Singh; he stands at 6-under par through 11 holes.

Langer struggled on Nos. 14 and 15 for the second straight day, but managed an even-par 72 to come in at 1-over 145. He is currently tied for 24th.

Couples had to birdie Nos. 15, 16 and 17 to card his second straight 73 for a 2-over 146 total. He is tied for 33rd place.

"That's when I play my best, when I'm 4-over," Couples said. In both of the first two rounds, he went as high as 4-over before rallying on the back nine.

This will make 19 straight cuts for Langer, the longest active streak at the Masters. He trails only Gary Player (23), Tom Watson (21) and Gene Littler (19) in that category.

Couples, who has made 17 straight cuts, is one of only two players who have played in at least 10 Masters to make every cut. John Huston made 12 straight from 1990-2001, but did not qualify for this year's tournament.

Several prominent players are in danger of missing the cut, including reigning British Open champ David Duval, European star Colin Montgomerie and Augusta native Charles Howell.

Duval stands at 2-over through 12 holes of the second round, while Montgomerie and Howell are in a large group of players at 3-over par. Montgomerie has seven holes left this morning, while Howell was in the middle of the 10th fairway when play was called.

PGA winner David Toms and John Daly also are at 3-over, but they will have to wait and see what happens. Both finished their rounds Friday, and both players made bogey on the 18th to end their rounds on a sour note.

A number of former champions are expected to miss today's cut. They include Mark O'Meara, Fuzzy Zoeller, Ray Floyd, Sandy Lyle, Ian Woosnam, Seve Ballesteros, Tommy Aaron, Gary Player, Ben Crenshaw, Charles Coody and Arnold Palmer.

Augusta native Larry Mize also could miss the cut. He's at 4-over par after two rounds of 74.

Instituted in 1957, the average Masters cut falls at 148.75. The high came at 10-over 154 in 1982; the low of 145 has happened four times, including last year.
