Mickelson ends majors drought at the Masters

Web posted
Sunday, April 11, 2004 - 6:12pm EST

Phil Mickelson (Stats | Bio) birdied the 18th hole Sunday to win the 68th Masters Tournament in dramatic fashion by one shot over Ernie Els (Stats | Bio) .

Mickelson ended an 0-for-46 streak in golf's four major championships.

The last golfer to win the Masters with a birdie on the 18th hole was Mark O'Meara (Stats | Bio) in 1998.

Els made two eagles to seize the lead Sunday, but Mickelson roared back with five birdies on the back nine. He rolled in the 18-foot birdie putt and jumped in the air, thrusting his arms upward.
