AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Brett Wetterich played even-par golf to maintain his Masters Tournament lead on a chilly Friday morning at Augusta National Golf Club. Wetterich, the 18-hole co-leader along with Justin Rose at 3-under par, opened his second round with eight straight pars before a birdie on nine.
Rose and five other players who shot under par in the first round will tee off this afternoon.
Luke Donald was the only morning player to make a move. He started his second round at 1-over par and bogeyed No. 1 before eagling the par-5 second hole. He was even par through three holes.
Wetterich is building on the momentum he found two weeks ago at the World Golf Championship event at Doral. He was the runner-up to Tiger Woods in that tournament, and the duel with the world's best player gave Wetterich confidence coming to Augusta.
"It's nice to know you can go head-to-head playing with the best player in the world," he said. "I know he wasn't playing his best golf that day, but it's still nice to know I didn't shoot myself in the foot and drop seven shots and come in 10th."
Masters favorites Tiger Woods and Vijay Singh played early Friday. Woods, a four-time winner, was 1-over for his round, 2-over for the tournament through two holes. Singh, the 2000 Masters champ, was even-par for his round, 1-over for the tournament through one hole.
