Blowfish don't have to swim in a school

Mark Bryan, guitarist for Hootie & the Blowfish, said part of the secret of the band's success is the occasional opportunity for its members to go it alone.

He said the band, which headlines Tuesday's Drive for Show, Rock Fore! Dough concert at First Tee of Augusta, has taken a break from recording, and members are now working on solo projects. The result, he said, should be a recharged Blowfish bringing new musical ideas back to the band.

"The fact is, we've been together for more than 20 years and are able to make our own albums," said Bryan, whose solo album End of the Front was released March 11.

Darius Rucker, the band's lead singer, and Jim "Soni" Sonefeld, the drummer, also have been working on solo projects.

The band took a break from the benefit last year but will headline it next year.
