Double bogeys trip up Love's charge
Davis Love III has made nine birdies through two rounds of the Masters Tournament, enough to be a factor on the weekend.
He still could be, but some major missteps leave the Georgian plenty of ground to make up.
Love, who has fired rounds of 74-71-145 to put him seven shots off Chad Campbell's lead, had two double bogeys and a triple bogey in the first two rounds.
He opened the tournament Thursday with a double bogey on No. 1, then had a triple bogey on No. 12 that day. On Friday, he made double bogey on No. 10.
"Give me three holes over, that's seven shots right there," he said. "That's the difference between being in the lead."
The 41-year-old Love, a two-time Masters runner-up, can't complain otherwise.
"I'm playing pretty good," he said. "I'm not scoring as good as I'd like. I keep making a double or triple every once in a while, and it's just killing me."
On the par-4 10th on Friday, Love's approach went over the green, leading to the double bogey.
"(Playing partner) Adam (Scott) and I both thought the wind was in, and we both hit it over the green," Love said. "He hooked his a little bit; I didn't cut mine, but we didn't hit as bad of shots as we got."
Scott also made double bogey on No. 10.
Love said the wind started picking up on No. 7 or No. 8 during his round, making club selection difficult.
"You're always guessing," he said.
Love had 14 pars, three birdies and the double bogey Friday. He birdied Nos. 3 (12-footer), 13 (10-footer) and 16 (eight-footer).
"I feel pretty good about it," Love said of his game. "Now, if I can get out of my own way."
At least Love is around for the weekend. In 2005, he missed the cut by three shots.
