No. 15 keeps several off top of leaderboard

Sunday, April 08, 2007

|

Firethorn lived up to its name Saturday.

The once tame par-5 15th lit up several players who had their sights set on the top of the leaderboard and stuck them with scores that dampened their chances of putting on a green jacket today.

A few of the victims:

Geoff Ogilvy came to the 530-yard hole at 3-over par, having made eagle at the par-5 13th to get into contention. He left No. 15 at 7-over after putting two balls into the water fronting the green and settling for a quadruple bogey. He finished with an 81 and is eight shots off the lead held by Stuart Appleby at 2-over par.

Paul Casey also came to the hole at 3-over. Two balls in the water later, he slinked away with a triple bogey and at 6-over par. He ended his day with 5-over par 77.

Lucas Glover's pain actually began on No. 13, where he came in at 2-over par and made bogey. He bogeyed the 14th and continued his misery on No. 15, where he doubled his trouble. The former Clemson golfer limped home to finish at 7-over par 79.

Padraig Harrington would be in a tie for the lead if only he had parred the hole. He didn't, taking a double bogey to enter today's final round tied for fourth at 4-over par.

Other golfers suffered less but still felt No. 15's sting. Tiger Woods, who is tied for second heading into today's final round, had an outside chance for eagle but three-putted the green for a disappointing par.

The hole historically has played under par, and most golfers see the 15th as an opportunity to make up a shot on the field. Though it still ranked among the least penal holes Saturday - 11th toughest - it was tied with three other holes for dishing out the most double bogeys (5) and tied with the fourth hole for the dreaded other (triple bogey and beyond) at two.

"I got a little unlucky on number 15," Glover said. "I caught a gust and got unlucky with the wind. Except for that one, it was pretty much my fault."
