Who's hot: Jose Maria Olazabal
After a tee shot of more than 280 yards, Olazabal hit his best shot of the week.
His 5-wood from 246 yards came to rest 18 inches from the hole, and the tap-in eagle putt briefly pulled him within one shot of Phil Mickelson.
"I've hit a few good shots during the week, but not under those circumstances,'' Olazabal said after tying for third.
Wild card: Rocco Mediate
Mediate played his way out of a certain invitation to the 2007 Masters in the final round.
After bogeying the first hole, Mediate vaulted into contention with three consecutive birdies at Nos. 6-8.
But Amen Corner wasn't kind. After a bogey at No. 11, Mediate proceeded to take 10 on the par-3 12th after dumping three balls into Rae's Creek. He finally cleared the water on his seventh shot, but it went in the bunker. He then blasted out and two-putted for the 10.
Mediate finished with 80 to tie for 36th.
Who's not: Ernie Els
Els was in position to challenge for his first green jacket after rounds of 71-71.
But in the third round, which was delayed by rain and then halted by darkness, the South African stumbled to 74.
In the final round, he couldn't recover from a double bogey on the par-5 second hole. Bogeys at Nos. 5 and 7 sent him out in 40, and he had to birdie two of the final five holes to salvage 76.
Els, who missed the latter part of the 2005 season because of an injury, has not won a major since the 2002 British Open.
Olazabal struck a blow for medium-length hitters with the best round of the tournament, 6-under-par 66 on Sunday.
The two-time Masters winner scorched the front nine with five birdies en route to 32.
On the back, he birdied Nos. 13 and 14 before hitting it close on the par-5 15th for an eagle. But a three-putt bogey on the 16th derailed his bid for a green jacket.
Olazabal proved that solid iron play and good putting can be substitutes for power at Augusta National.
