Couples' cut streak comes to end

The streak is over.

Fred Couples missed a short birdie putt on the 18th hole Friday at Augusta National Golf Club and missed out on making the 36-hole cut at the Masters Tournament for a record 24th consecutive time.

"It's been a long time, and it's been fun," said Couples, who shot rounds of 76 and 72 for a 148 total.

Couples was tied with Gary Player for most consecutive cuts made at the Masters with 23. Couples' streak began in 1983, but he missed two tournaments through the years.

The cut fell at 3-over-par 147, and 45 players made it. The Masters takes the low 44 and ties, plus anyone within 10 shots of the leader, to play the final two rounds.

Couples wasn't the only big name to miss the cut.

Luke Donald, Ernie Els, Sergio Garcia and Steve Stricker were among the notables who won't be here on the weekend.

All three players with Augusta ties - Charles Howell, Vaughn Taylor and Larry Mize - also missed the cut.

Trevor Immelman leads the tournament at 8-under-par.
