Woods is ready to make up 7 shots

Saturday, April 12, 2008

Tiger Woods made a crazy par to cap a frustrating afternoon at Augusta National Golf Club on Friday.

He took note of the weather forecast and delivered an ominous message to the 12 players either tied or ahead of him.

"It was nice to end up under par for the day and the tournament," he said. "Seven back on this course, under the conditions coming up ... you can make that up."

More specifically, Woods thinks he can make that up. He has rallied from seven shots behind after 36 holes to win six times on the PGA Tour. In March, he came from that much down at the Arnold Palmer Invitational to win, making a 24-foot birdie putt on the 72nd hole.

Woods shot 71 on Friday to finish at 1-under-par 143, tied with Vijay Singh, Jim Furyk, Robert Karlsson, Nick Dougherty, Sean O'Hair and J.B. Holmes. Between Woods and leader Trevor Immelman are major championship winners Retief Goosen, Mike Weir and Phil Mickelson.

Given his deficit and the players ahead of him, Woods has much work to do if he wants to win a fifth green jacket and the first leg of golf's Grand Slam, prizes that the media and fans had been all but ready to award him before he took a shot at Augusta National.

Woods also has to battle a recent trend, because the past nine Masters winners (he won three of those times) came from the top-five entering Saturday's third round.

Battling a balky driver and afternoon winds that swirled for 14 holes of his round, then died, Woods hit only eight of 14 fairways and fought through numerous tight spots to get his score under par, then keep it that way.

He made his first birdie of the week at the par-4 first, but he bogeyed the par-5 second.

Woods finished strong, playing his last six holes at 2-under, including a tap-in birdie at No. 17. But his final hole was the most entertaining.

His drive drifted to the right among the trees, but instead of pitching back to the 18th fairway, Woods punched out to the 10th fairway. He then pitched onto the green, and the ball appeared to be tracking to the hole before it hit Stuart Appleby's ball, on the green and eight feet from the hole.

Woods' ball stopped six feet away, but he made the putt and finished with his 11th consecutive round at Augusta in the 70s.
