North Augusta is a growing South Carolina community across the Savannah River from the city with which it shares part of its name.
The city of more than 17,000 has plans to build a riverfront development near the river to include homes and businesses. It's a change that will extend three major downtown roads - Georgia Avenue, West Avenue and Crystal Lake Drive.
Also, the city has a new walking path, called the North Augusta Greeneway. The Greeneway meanders throughout the city and many of its neighborhoods and can be accessed at three locations: Pisgah Road off Five Notch Road; Riverside Boulevard near the entrance to the River Golf Club, which can be seen from the 13th Street bridge; and Riverview Park off Riverview Park Drive.
Probably the most visible historic structure in North Augusta is Lookaway Hall, at the fork of Georgia and Carolina avenues.
Lookaway Hall was built in 1895 by Walter Jackson, the brother of James U. Jackson, who founded North Augusta. Today, it's a bed and breakfast establishment.
