It offers more than 50 programs leading to associate, bachelor, master and specialist degrees, plus a paralegal certificate and a cooperative doctoral degree. The sciences are its most popular majors.
In 1955, trustees of the Junior College of Augusta realized their school needed a new home.
The two-year college was being squeezed out by the rapid growth of the Academy of Richmond County, with which it shared a campus.
About the same time, the old Augusta Arsenal on the top of the hill from Walton Way was being shut down. Eventually, the school moved from the Richmond Academy campus to the arsenal grounds.
On Jan. 18, 1957, the junior college received 38.21 acres from the General Services Administration, which leased the arsenal.
Fifteen more acres were given to the college in 1959.
By mid-1958, the Junior College was accepted into the University System of Georgia and renamed Augusta College, later becoming Augusta State University.
