WHERE TO GO: Highlights
If you haven't seen Augusta National's course, then you'll want to check out Amen Corner and other landmarks. So, instead of following the course in numerical order, try this:
Cut across the first and ninth fairways at the gallery crossings. Make your way toward the 16th hole, which will be to your right. Listen for the patrons who encourage the players on that hole to skip their shots across the water.
After taking that scene in, go back toward Amen Corner. The 11th, 12th and 13th holes are considered to be among the most spectacular stretches of holes in the world.
MEET THE ROOKIE: Reinier Saxton
The British Amateur champion from Holland is making his first Masters appearance. The 21-year-old is coming off a victory in the Spanish Amateur in March and played in the Georgia Cup last week in Alpharetta, Ga.
Q: What are your impressions of Augusta National?
A: It's a beautiful place with a lot of history. I've never seen a course like this. It's totally different from everything from where I'm from. I wouldn't trade playing here for anything.
Q: What are your expectations this week?
A: I think I'm playing pretty good. You want to play well. It's just another tournament; a very different one. I want to enjoy myself. That's my main goal this week. Hopefully I can get it together and play well.
Q: Do you have any practice rounds lined up with certain players?
A: I haven't really thought about it yet, but hopefully, yes. I think all the players here, you want to play with. I played with some nice players in the practice rounds when I played in the British Open.
WHAT TO EXPECT: Rookies
Masters rookies (patrons, not players) are always fun to watch.
They are overwhelmed by the green surroundings and the manicured fairways, tees and greens.
They also are surprised by the change in elevation. The drop from the No. 1 tee to Amen Corner is more than 100 feet.
The cost of concessions at Augusta National also comes as a shock, but in a good way. The most expensive sandwich is just $2.50, and a soft drink costs only $1. Beer prices are $2.75-$3.50.
First-timers also need to shop early for souvenirs. It's not uncommon for some popular clothing items to sell out in the first couple of days.
