Englishman Ross Fisher put his recent Bay Hill snafu behind him Thursday morning to take the early lead at the Masters Tournament.

Fisher was 4-under-par through 11 holes in the first competitive round of his career at Augusta National Golf Club.

Fisher is a 28-year-old who plays mostly on the European Tour. He has played three events in the United States this year, his best finish a fourth at the World Golf Championship Accenture Match play.

Fisher did not fare so well in his last start on American soil: the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill two weeks ago. Fisher was disqualified for signing an incorrect scorecard after the second round. He would have missed the cut anyway after shooting a 76 in the opening round and a 79 in the second round.

Fisher has won twice on the European Tour, including last year's European Open.

He leads Tim Clark, Shingo Katayama, Bernhard Langer and Angel Cabrera by two shots.

Among the favorites, Phil Mickelson is the only one on the course. The two-time Masters champion bogeyed his opening hole and is 1-over-par on his day. Other top contenders tee off later, including Tiger Woods, who starts at 1:52 p.m., and defending champion Trevor Immelman, who goes off at 1:41 p.m.
