Crash landing: Kim frustrated a day after his birdie binge

Anthony Kim shuffled his feet, stepping in and out of the greenside bunker on the 18th hole Saturday.

He was in quite a predicament.

The 23-year-old's approach shot was just inches from the trap. It settled on the edge closest to the patrons.

Kim was forced to hit his shot over the bunker and on to the green, but he had trouble choosing a stance.

He tried with both feet outside the bunker; his left foot in the bunker and his right foot out; and both feet in the bunker.

Nothing felt right.

He walked away from the bunker, took a few moments and tried again.

Eventually, he settled for making the shot with an uneven stance, clearing the bunker and making the putt for par.

A day after breaking a Masters Tournament record with 11 birdies in one round and securing the lowest score of the second round with 65, Kim was aggravated with his play at Augusta National Golf Club.

It didn't matter that he tied Tiger Woods' record with 16 birdies in consecutive rounds and was tied for 10th place with Woods and seven others heading into the final day.

"It's a little frustrating especially after playing the last 18 holes at 65," he said. "But at the same time, it's a tough golf course. I'm just trying to put the ball in the right spots and make some putts."

The Masters rookie was aiming to put himself in better contention for a green jacket. He shot 72 and stands at 4-under 212.

"Obviously you come to tournaments to play well and to win the golf tournament," Kim said. "It's a new experience and I'm glad I'm playing pretty well, but I left a few out there."

His five birdies were offset by three bogeys and a double bogey.

Even though the birdies were not as plentiful for him Saturday, Kim has found success on the 13th hole. He has birdied the hole all three days.

"I've been hitting good drives on that hole," Kim said. "I'm shaping the ball well off the tee there. If you hit a good tee shot, it's a pretty good birdie hole."

Kim's ability to make birdies will be useful today. He said he plans to keep his "head screwed on straight and try to make some putts.

"If I get the ball rolling, I'm still not counting myself out of it," he said.
