Yawns had taken the place of roars the past two years. On Sunday, the Masters Tournament brought its old excitement back.
Cheers, screams and lusty applause could be heard throughout Augusta National Golf Club during the final round. Some of the loudest came wherever the pairing of past Masters champions Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods happened to be.
Here's a sampling of the exuberance heard from the stands to the left of the No. 15 green, where you can also see the No. 16 green and get glimpses of Nos. 6, 7, 13 and 17:
- At 2:51 p.m., to the left, patrons roar as Mickelson birdies No. 6, his second of four consecutive birdies.
- At 3:20, a roar comes down the hill from the No. 8 green after Woods eagles to get into contention.
- At 3:22, after Sergio Garcia and Stuart Appleby depart the 15th green, workers place a red 10 by Mickelson's name on the large leaderboard to the right of the green. Fans at Nos. 15 and 16 give a loud cheer with Lefty two off the pace.
- At 3:24, workers place Woods' name in the bottom spot on the board. His eagle at No. 8 is posted. Some patrons offer up some "woo-hoo-hoos" with the news.
- At 3:31, a light roar comes from the left down the hill from the No. 5 green. Jim Furyk's birdie gets him to 8-under.
- At 4:14, patrons cheer at No. 16 as John Merrick rolls in his birdie putt to get to 8-under.

- At 4:53, Woods hits his second shot approach onto the right side of the No. 15 green. Patrons roar and let out some "woooooooos."
- At 4:54, Mickelson knocks his approach to No. 15 inside Woods', leaving him a four-foot eagle putt. Patrons stand with their arms raised. Whistles and "woooooooos" dominate the moment.

- At 5:02, Woods stiffs his tee shot at No. 16. The large gathering roars.
- At 5:08, Woods converts the short birdie putt and pumps his fist. A loud mixture of cheers and applause follow. Several patrons yell, "C'mon, c'mon."
- At 5:15, a roar comes from the right. At the No. 17 green, Mickelson hits his approach to four feet.
- Also at 5:15, seconds after the Mickelson roar, another comes from the far right. Kenny Perry birdies the par-3 12th, his first birdie of the day.
