Fantastic shots Sunday bring out roars from crowd

Monday, April 12, 2010

The thousands of patrons who flocked to Augusta National Golf Club on Saturday saw a number of stellar shots and delivered a weekend's worth of roars. As it turns out, they saved some of them for the final day.

Two holes-in-one, champion Phil Mickelson's second shot to the par-5 No. 13 and Tiger Woods' eagle from the fairway on No. 7 were among the shots that energized patrons during Sunday's final round. The roars that rippled through the second nine Saturday afternoon continued to echo off the pine trees in the same area of the course a day later.

Nathan Green, playing in the first group out, made a hole-in-one on the par-3 16th hole, and Ryan Moore followed nine groups later with another ace.

"It was the loudest roar I've ever heard in my entire life," said Moore, who finished with a final-round 68.

Bob Durden, of Atlanta, had set up a perch on one side of the 14th green by the time the first group of the afternoon, Chad Campbell and Green, played the hole around 1 p.m. Sunday. He said he had watched Mickelson hole out from No. 14 the previous afternoon from a different area of the hole.

"(Patrons) were just going berserk," he said.

They had a similar reaction on the par-4 seventh when Woods used a 7-iron to make the day's second eagle on the hole. Adam Scott also holed out a second shot on his way to 71.

"It sounded like they were right in front of us," said Ken Edmunds, who said he was watching action at the 16th green Sunday when he heard the roar that followed Woods' eagle.

Those around the 14th green waited for another roar-worthy shot. Woods knocked his approach within five feet but ended up three-putting for bogey. By the time Mickelson came through to make par, no one in the last two groups made better than that on the hole.

"We got our fun in on (Saturday)," said Jim Harris, a first-time patron from Charlotte, N.C., who attended the tournament Saturday and Sunday and watched most of the action at No. 14.
