Three months and three different high-profile winners, all with one constant: swing coach Sean Foley.
Students of Foley have won four times in the past seven weeks on the PGA Tour. In March, Justin Rose won the WGC–Cadillac Championship and Tiger Woods took the Arnold Palmer Invitational.
Hunter Mahan began the run with his WGC–Accenture Match Play Championship win in late February, then opened April with a Houston Open victory.
“He’s good at what he does,” Woods said of Foley. “You know, I think if you look at the guys he works with, and we are all pretty good ball strikers, that’s basically what Sean focuses on.”
Foley is known to take a scientific approach with swings. He uses TrackMan, which measures attributes such as club speed, to help analyze swings.
Mahan said Foley uses the perfect amount of science when teaching.
“I love talking about it and learning more about it,” Mahan said. “His job is to learn it and then tell us in layman’s terms, kind of the best out of it. There’s only so much you can use on each player, and he knows us very well. So he teaches differently.”
Rose said Foley knows it’s about combining talent with the numbers. He said his instructor deserves to be on the hot streak he’s on.
As for Woods, his victory at Bay Hill was a continuation of his progression.
“I think it was just a process,” he said. “I’ve been putting together two good rounds, eventually three, and now four, so I just had to keep sticking with it and getting more experience working with Sean.”
