2021 Latin America Amateur Championship canceled

The 2021 Latin America Amateur Championship has been canceled, the USGA announced Tuesday.

The tournament was canceled due to “complications presented by the COVID-19 pandemic.” It was originally scheduled for play January 14-17 at Lima Golf Club in Lima, Peru. Future championship plans are to be announced at a later date, according to the release.

The tournament champion receives invitations to compete in the Masters Tournament, The Open Championship, The Amateur Championship and the U.S. Amateur Championship. The champion and runner(s)-up also receive an exemption into final qualifying for the U.S. Open.

2019 Latin America Amateur champion Alvaro Ortiz made the cut at Augusta, finishing tied for 36th at 2-under-par. Ortiz was one shot behind Viktor Hovland for low amateur.

Abel Gallegos of Argentina won 2020 Latin America Amatuer champio to earn a spot in this year’s Masters, scheduled for November 9-15.
