Four Augusta-area golfers remained on the course Friday when play was halted due to darkness during the second round of this year’s Masters Tournament.
Charles Howell III played his first 15 holes Friday in 4-under par and sits at 5 under for the tournament. The Augusta native will complete his final three holes beginning at 7:30 a.m. Saturday. Howell, who resides in Orlando, began Friday’s round on the second nine, and recorded birdies at Nos. 15 and 18. Once making the turn, he tallied additional birdies at Nos. 2, 3 and 5.
Also scaling the leaderboard was former Augusta State standout Patrick Reed. The 2018 Masters champion bogeyed No. 1, but responded with three birdies over his next 10 holes. Reed sits at 6-under par with seven holes left in his second round.
Local legend Larry Mize shot an opening-round 70, but faltered Friday with 39 on his first nine. Mize, the 1987 Masters winner, sits at 2 over for the tournament with four holes left in his attempt to make his first cut since 2017. The highlight of Mize’s second round was a birdie at the par-3 16th, which he also birdied Thursday.
Also needing a strong finish to play the weekend is Aiken’s Kevin Kisner. The UGA product is 2 over for the tournament with five holes left. Kisner shot 71 on Thursday, but had three bogeys and a double bogey so far on his card in the second round.
