Amateur Randal Lewis had a case of the nerves during Monday’s practice round with Tom Watson, but he survived.

“It was a little bit nerve-wracking,” Lewis said. “It was good to get that first tee shot out of the way.”

Watson said the reigning U.S. Mid-Amateur champion played “very well.”

Lewis has now played eight rounds at Augusta National Golf Club, and it’s no surprise what he likes best.

“The back nine is just so spectacular,” he said. “That stretch at Amen Corner is just spectacular.”

Lewis said the experience is one he won’t soon forget.

“It was fun. My focus level was way, way high,” he said. “It went too fast. I’ll never forget it.”

Most amateurs stay in the Crow’s Nest above the clubhouse, but the 54-year-old Lewis is not.

“I have sleep apnea and use a breathing machine. I don’t want to keep those guys up, and I need a good night’s sleep, too,” Lewis said. “I’ve been up there to see it and it’s pretty cool.”

Now he is ready for Thursday, and the tournament, to arrive.

“I’m anxious to get going and tee it up when it counts and see what I can do,” he said.
